Syncsort offers Hadoop data sort alternative
Data management vendor Syncsort will announce on Wednesday its entry into the Apache Hadoop community, with plans to enable high-performance data sorts to be used with the open source distributed computing platform. Instead of using Hadoop's default sort, users could swap in another sorting system via an external sort plug-in capability Syncsort is contributing to the Hadoop open source community. Syncsort also will offer a Hadoop edition of its DMExpress data acceleration software, providing an alternative to the default Hadoop sort. Read More

Microsoft, Juniper urged to patch dangerous IPv6 DoS hole
Security experts are urging Microsoft and Juniper to patch a year-old IPv6 vulnerability so dangerous it can freeze any Windows machine on a LAN in a matter of minutes. Microsoft has downplayed the risk because the hole requires a physical connection to the wired LAN. Juniper says it has delayed a patch because the hole only affects a small number of its products and it wants the IETF to fix the protocol instead. Read More

Rackspace to wind down Slicehost
Some Slicehost users were dismayed to hear that Rackspace, which acquired the company in 2008, plans to wind down the service. In an email to customers on Tuesday, Mark Interrante, a Rackspace vice president, said the company will phase out the Slicehost virtual private hosting service and encourage customers to migrate to Rackspace. Red Hat to preview Java caching technology
Red Hat will launch a preview of a new commercial enterprise Java data caching technology, based on its experimental Infinispan data grid software, the company announced Tuesday. JBoss Enterprise Data Grid 6 will compete with other enterprise Java data caches, such as Oracle's Coherence, VMware's GemStone, and Terracotta's Ehcache. Read More
