U.S. court approves Google's $900M bid for Nortel patents
Nortel Networks has obtained court approval to accept a $900 million bid from Google for the entirety of its remaining patent portfolio. The former network equipment maker announced on April 4 that it plans to sell around 6,000 patents, either issued or applied for, in the field of wired and wireless digital communications. Read More

Laptop users still prefer USB modems
Mobile data users still overwhelmingly prefer USB modems for keeping PCs and other devices connected on the go, but they may turn more to built-in cellular radios and portable Wi-Fi hotspots over the next five years, according to ABI Research. Despite the growing market for connected tablets and the availability of laptops and netbooks with high-speed cellular modules built in, worldwide shipments of USB modems still surpass embedded 3G and 4G modules by three to one, ABI said in a report. But by 2016, that ratio may change to near parity. Read More

VMware causes second outage while recovering from first
VMware's attempt to recover from an outage in its brand-new cloud computing service inadvertently caused a second outage the next day, the company said. VMware's new Cloud Foundry service -- which is still in beta -- suffered downtime over the course of two days last week, not long after the more highly publicized outage that hit Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud.
